Nipple correction

About nipple correction

You may be dissatisfied with your nipples. You may have nipples that are too long or too protruding, an oversized areola or a retracted nipple. Our surgeon can also correct retracted nipples. These nipple corrections are often performed in combination with a breast reduction or lift. The nipple correction in itself is a fairly minor procedure that only requires local anesthesia.

What happens during a nipple correction

Nipple reduction

A nipple reduction is actually a nipple shortening, where a piece of the protruding nipple is removed. It is then stitched up and covered with gauze. Think carefully about a nipple reduction if you want to breastfeed in the future. It is possible that the milk will be damaged.

Nipple size reduction

Each nipple consists of two parts. The protruding part is the nipple. The pigmented hold around it is the areola. In a areola reduction, the diameter of the areola is reduced by loosening the skin around the nipple. Then part of the skin is cut away and everything is neatly sutured back in place.

The result

After a nipple correction, there are always scars that never become completely invisible. In general, the wounds recover quickly and the end result is also quickly visible.

Recovery after nipple correction

The nipple correction will take about 30-60 minutes. After the operation you can often be brought home the same day. The nipple and breast are swollen for the first 3 days after the operation and usually bruising is visible. The surgeon mainly uses soluble sutures.

Safety precaution

The nipple correction is a relatively 'minor procedure' and although the risks and complications are generally small, the area of the nipple is a sensitive and important one.

The following complications are possible:

  • Allergic reaction
  • Infection
  • After bleeding
  • Scarring of skin edges
  • Wrinkling around the scar
  • Nipple numbness
  • Reduction/inability to breastfeed
  • Formation of thick scars

Nipple correction is subject to the same safety and precautionary measures as breast augmentation.
