- Nipple reduction
A nipple reduction is actually a nipple shortening, whereby a piece of the protruding nipple is removed. It is then stitched up and covered with gauze. Do give nipple reduction serious thought if you are intending to breastfeed in the future as it could damage the milk ducts.
- Areola reduction
Each nipple consists in fact of two parts. The protruding part is the nipple itself and the pigmented area around it is the areola. In a areola reduction, the diameter of the areola is reduced by loosening the skin around the nipple. Part of the skin is then cut away and everything is neatly sutured back into place.
The scars resulting from a nipple correction never fade away completely. The wounds generally recover quickly, and the result is also quickly visible.
A nipple correction takes about 30-60 minutes. You can usually be taken home the same day. The nipple and breast will be swollen in the first 3 days after surgery, and there is usually some bruising. The surgeon mainly uses soluble sutures.
The nipple correction is a relatively ‘minor procedure,’ and although the risks and complications are generally small, the area of the nipple is a sensitive and important one.
