FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Eyelid Correction

Eyelid correction, or blepharoplasty, may be considered in several situations. If you have noticeable sagging or drooping of the upper eyelids that obstruct your vision, an eyelid correction procedure can help improve your sight and enhance your appearance. Lower eyelid bags or puffiness that makes you look tired or older than your actual age can also be addressed through eyelid correction. Additionally, if you have excess skin and wrinkles around the eyelids, an eyelid correction can help rejuvenate your look and restore a youthful appearance. It is essential to consult with a qualified surgeon specializing in eyelid correction to determine if you are a suitable candidate and discuss the potential benefits and risks associated with the procedure.

Ideal candidates for eyelid correction are healthy individuals with excess skin or fat on the eyelids that create a tired, droopy appearance or sagging skin that obstructs their vision. This procedure may also be performed for medical reasons, such as improving vision or relieving symptoms like ptosis.

Most patients barely feel any pain after the eyelid correction. Some patients, however, suffer from a burning feeling. You can take 1000 mg of paracetamol four times a day. The plasters reduce the stretching sensation around the eyes and may remain in place.

The skin around the eyes feels a bit tight after the treatment. Light swelling and bruises are normal. You may have irritated eyes and blurred vision for several weeks. This is not something you have to worry about. It’s a natural body reaction.

Eyelid correction is typically an outpatient procedure that takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the extent of the correction needed.

If you have had an eyelid correction under local anesthetic, you will have a check-up and be able to go home as soon as 30 minutes later.

After an eyelid correction under general anesthesia, you must wait three to four hours before going home. Therefore, we advise you, once home, to eat easily digestible food such as water, tea, and rusk.

Remember to cool the eyes properly. This reduces swelling and bruising. The recovery period is of around two to three weeks. It will take 12 weeks for the swelling to disappear completely, the scars to have healed, and the result to be visible. This period varies from person to person. Please read our post-surgery advice carefully.

There are risks associated with every surgery, and your plastic surgeon will walk you through them. However, it is essential for your well-being and health not to withhold medical information and to follow the plastic surgeon’s advice. If you have any physical complaints, don’t hesitate and call the care team to see if an extra check-up by the surgeon is necessary.

Patients can typically expect a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance of the eyelids after eyelid correction. The procedure results are usually long-lasting but may be affected by factors like aging and sun exposure.

Eyelid correction treatment details

The plastic surgeon removes excess skin and sometimes excess subcutaneous fat tissue by making an incision in the skin fold of the upper eyelid. The scar that remains after surgery is almost invisible. Sometimes an upper eyelid correction is combined with a lower eyelid correction.
A lower eyelid correction can make a world of difference: 1. You will look much more rested by removing excess skin or a fat pocket (puff). This is done by making an incision just below the lower lash line. 2. The excess skin is cut away, and the fat bag is removed, creating a rested, younger look. 3. The wound is sutured below the lower lash line, making the scar invisible.
Sometimes an eyelid correction alone is not enough. Our surgeon will advise you on the various possibilities. An example can tighten the lower eyelid (canthopexy). All three eyelid corrections mentioned above give an excellent natural result with almost invisible scars. Please make an appointment for a consultation with our surgeon so that he can tell you which surgery best suits your needs.
