FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about Muscle Relaxants
The specific mechanism of action depends on the type of muscle relaxants. Facial fillers, for example, work by adding volume and plumping up areas of the face. Neurotoxins, on the other hand, temporarily relax specific facial muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Different muscle relaxants have different modes of action to achieve their intended effects.
This substance is not a filler but a protein that relaxes the muscles. It is injected in minimal quantities into the muscles of your face to relax them or to prevent the development of frown lines. Temporary muscle relaxants are the most popular treatment and the most used non-chirurgical treatment worldwide.
A treatment with temporary muscle relaxants can be the solution for various complaints. Think of signs of aging, a stern look, migraines, excessive sweating and even teeth grinding.
Our doctor specializes in anti-aging and is also the head ENT doctor at the Erasmus Hospital. His expertise and experience of the face deliver beautiful natural results. Essential Aesthetics works with the right experts and the best brands: Dysport, Vistabel, Bocouture, and Azzalure.A few days after the treatment, the muscle relaxant will start to work, and muscle activity will decrease. Wrinkles continue to diminish until about 2 weeks after treatment. After two weeks, the effect on the muscle is optimal.
The effect of the treatment remains visible for an average of 3-7 months. Experience shows that after several treatments, the effect will last longer. Most people require a temporary muscle relaxing treatment every 3-4 months to maintain the desired result.
On average, 90% of patients achieve substantially reduced wrinkles, but there are differences between patients’ responses. The treatment results may be disappointing for a tiny percentage.
Please note: if you previously had a muscle relaxant treatment and switched brands, the result may last less long as your body sees another brand as a new substance.
The second time, the effect will last longer again. Unfortunately, it is impossible to estimate how long the effect will actually last.
The effects of this treatment are not permanent.
For some, a pro, and for others, a con: the muscle relaxing injections are not a permanent solution. It wears off after several months. Usually, you must repeat the treatment at least twice a year to maintain good results, that is, a wrinkle-free look.
Temporary muscle relaxants could trigger allergic reactions.
As with any other medicine, it can trigger specific allergic reactions. Should this happen, receiving a counter-treatment from a medical doctor is essential. However, if the response is treated immediately, it is most likely not to leave any consequences.
Some facial expressions might be (temporarily) lost.
The trick with the main feature of this substance, its ability to paralyze muscles, is that it can warrant results you may not like, in addition to erasing wrinkles. When improperly injected, it may cause the appearance of a constantly frowned or surprised look or prevent squinting. It can lead to a lack of proper facial expression. That’s why always choose an experienced and licensed aesthetic doctor and a reputable clinic is so important.
The treatments don’t come cheap.
Paying for muscle relaxants several times a year is relatively expensive. We have a VIP club for our members, though, that ensures discounts for our regular patients.
Sometimes it needs more than one visit.
Sometimes patients don’t get excellent results after their first treatment but need to return. However, this rarely happens with experienced injectors who are experienced with the treatment and your face.
There can be side effects.
Most side effects are mild and don’t cause any significant discomfort, such as bruising, swelling at the injection site, or some light headaches. But some major issues can occur in a tiny percentage of patients, such as neck pain, upper respiratory tract infection, nausea, minor loss of speech, and eyelid drooping. Should this happen to you, make sure to consult with your physician immediately.
It works
This treatment has been proven highly effective and delivers astonishing results, practically making patients feel years younger. In addition, there are millions of clients happy with their results.
The treatment is quick and almost painless.
The procedure is very fast; it takes between 20 and 30 minutes, including initial consultation and preparation. The injecting process itself only takes 5-10 minutes. The needles that are used for injecting are tiny, and don’t hit any nerves. Mostly, patients feel little stings where the injections take place. Once the procedure is complete, patients don’t feel pain.
There is no recovery time.
In most cases, there is no downtime. Some patients may have tiny bruises on the places where the needle hit the skin, but they will disappear in just a few days. Avoid heavy exercise the day of injection and wait 2 weeks before having your next facial.
The results come fast.
You will see the results of the muscle relaxant – i.e., your smooth, wrinkle-free skin – within 2-7 days, but the full result will take 2 weeks.
The results are not permanent.
You can decide whether you want to continue doing the treatment or you would instead go the way things were. If you don’t love your results, you can let the substance wear off in several months, and you will look like you never had anything done.
There are hardly any risks.
Temporary muscle relaxant is a relatively low-risk treatment. It has been researched thoroughly, and most of its risks exist when the patient is not in good health or the injector needs to be a professional. Sometimes, unlicensed injectors use rip-offs of the substance that can cause harm. Avoid these risks by going to a clinic that is known for its good practice.
And finally…
Finally, the benefits of temporary muscle relaxants are not only aesthetic. As said before, it can also reduce excessive sweating of armpits and feet, relax chronic muscle pain, and help with migraine relief. This treatment can also be the solution for patients who grind their teeth during the night.
